Ruins of Old Tainan City Wall Around the Destroyed Little Eastern Gate, and the Little Western Gate of Old Tainan City The centre of Tainan City was one of the first developed regions by Han immigrants, also the first political center in Taiwan. In 1723, a wooden barrier was firstly built encircling Tainan city. The barrier was then reinforced into cement walls in 1788, with seven gates built by brick and stone, to protect the safety of the citizens. After 1895, the city walls and gates were gradually destroyed, accompanied by the expansion of Tainan City.
